Why did the curse break in FRUITS BASKET?

I think it was just old. The curse had begun to wear thin (e.g., Hatori transformed into a dragonfish instead of a dragon and the curse had already broken for the bird). Tohru also aided it by helping Akito realize that she didn't need the curse to bind people to her and that she could have normal relationships with other people.
