Why are stargazer lilies poisonous?

I have cats and a friend just gave me some stargazer lilies. I really wanted to know what makes the lilies toxic. All the sites I went to say it is unknown why they are toxic. WHY CAN'T SOMEONE MAKE IT KNOWN!?
