Can you smoke or chew Colorado River Reed?

Its the tall grass that grows by rivers and side walks it grows with a skinny stem and kinda leans out and the leafs from the grass are long and droop down causing the stem to lean. Now i would really like a plant specialist to answer this cause they would have a higher chance of knowing what im talking about, Im not expecting to get any high from this nor effect, Im just wondering if you could do it do it without any toxic effects or poisonous to fatal and dangerous outcomes. And by smoke i mean pull up the root dry it out n chew/smoke. Or if any part of the Reed it self is smokable or chewable. Now why would i wanna do this? Because of fact where i live its really boring and i see alot of that stuff and always want an interesting story to tell people. So if any sites or plant specialists know anything please let me know! :)
