Can I use hand shredded newspaper for my corn snakes bedding?

I haven't been able to make it to the store, and I have plenty of newspapers laying around. I've heard you can use those, but isn't the ink poisonous to them? I was thinking of hand shredding it (i don't have a shredder) would this work or should i stick with paper towels?
